Simply LASER means “Light Amplification by
Stimulated Emission of Radiation.” By
definition, laser refers to that tool which
emits light of intense frequencies of
invisible spectrum resulting in cut of
tissue precisely by burning or destroying.
Laser technology has brought a revolutionary
advancement in treatment procedures. Many
health problems like tumor, kidney stone,
varicose vein, acne etc are successively
treated with laser therapy. Even removal of
mole, birthmark, scar and tattoo is possible
practices were started in Ophthalmology and
Dermatology in 1960. Depending upon the type
of lesions and characteristics of patient’s
skin, different types of laser beams like
argon laser, carbon-dioxide laser, dye
laser, helium-neon laser, krypton laser and
others of a wide range of wavelengths are
used widely. With the development in the
field of science & technology, the use of
laser therapy has become more reliable &
effective in various clinical conditions.
Medical laser is indicated in
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bone
repair, pain relief, neuralgia and burns.
In the field of surgery,
medical laser is treated as the part
and parcel of a variety of operations.
Doctors recommend laser during corneal
surgery, detached retina repairing and
improvement of vision.
Plastic surgery is the another sector in
which laser has found its way. The
department of Oncology is adherent with
laser based treatment procedures. Embedded
blood vessels supplying nutrients to the
tumor (e.g. Melanoma) are destroyed by
application of laser lights without damaging
the ambient area. Further, biomedical
research reveals the necessity of lasers in
various diagnosis and treatment procedures
along with strong evidences.
